Concord senior Schachia Murphy kept her focus, despite the postponement of her events in the Division II meet.

Murphy won the 100- (12.35), 200- (25.51) and 400-meter dashes (59.45) in the girls Division II meet, turning in some of the better times she has run all season. She also ran the first leg her team's 4x400 relay team, which placed fourth.

"A lot of people might have lost focus [with the meet moved from Saturday to Monday because of rain]," Murphy said. "But you have to pace yourself to withstand it."

Young team comes on

In just its third year, Caravel's girls team placed fourth in Division II. The Buccaneers scored 48 points, a year after scoring only two.

Senior Davineia Payne, the state's girls basketball player of the year, was second in the high jump and shot put, third in triple jump and ran on the second-place 4x200 relay squad.

Sophomore Kanesha Brown was third in the long jump, fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100.

"We have a lot of girls that really worked hard and believed in themselves," Caravel coach Steve Oliver said.
