Glasgow relay advances at Penn Relays
Dragons' 1,600 quartet wins, will run Saturday in Philadelphia finals

PHILADELPHIA -- The Glasgow High girls track team sloshed through the showers Thursday to perform well during the first day of the 108th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

And when clouds made way for late afternoon sun, Tatnall's Meredith Lambert had a solid showing in her debut at the carnival.

Glasgow junior Kamilah Salaam was sixth (1:03.25) in the high school girls 400-meter hurdles, one of the first events of the soggy day.

Lambert, a two-time cross country state runner of the year, placed 10th (10:13.80) in the 3,000.

McKean junior Mandy Stille finished ninth in the high school girls triple jump at 35 feet, 8 1/2 inches. She missed advancing to the final round by less than four inches.

Glasgow also had two heat-winning relay teams, including the Northern Delaware 1,600-meter relay heat.

The team of Maureen LaFate, sisters Renee and Rachael Salter, and Salaam won in 4:05.97. Rachel Salter's third leg and then the anchor, Salaam, pushed Glagsow ahead of Ursuline (4:13.08) and Brandywine (4:19.73). Glasgow advanced to Saturday's Philadelphia Area championship heat.

In the 400 relay, the Dragons won their heat by more than two seconds (50.66) with Salaam, Renee Salter, LaFate and Tiara Hudson. Salaam thought they might have had a better time had they run in a better heat. Teams are assigned alphabetically for the 400 relay.

As for the 400 hurdles, Salaam felt her time could have been better. She drew the inside lane on the 10-lane track, tighter than a normal inside lane.

"Everyone else is staggered ahead of you [to start] and that's more than 25 meters from the beginning of the race that you have to make up on them. And it was real cold down on the track. But when you run bad, you just run bad," Salaam said.

Melanie Walker of St. Jago (Jamaica) won the 400 hurdles in 58.88 seconds.

In the 3,000, Elizabeth Maloy of Holy Names (N.Y.) was an easy winner in 9:52.74.

Lambert, who will attend Princeton University next year, made up ground and settled into a second pack behind Maloy by the halfway point.

"I'm not really shooting for place, I'm shooting for time, but this is all new for me and I didn't know what I was up against. I had a race plan down and tried to stick with it and let the girls carry me through. I wasn't really concerned about place and didn't know where I was," Lambert said.

Delaware connection

James Madison's Lauren Burawski, an Ursuline graduate, placed third in the college women's 3,000-meter race finishing in 9:46.78.
