Delaware Cuts Men's XC and Track and Field

Newest Tresolini article based on the Thursday evening meeting with Muir

"Spirited Support for UD XC/Track, But Change Unlikely"
“Canceling programs with nominal costs, that have produced winning records for many years, with athletes that regularly achieve high academic standing, is contrary to common sense.”- Bill Rhodunda

Jeff Pearlman Audio Interview
Great audio interview with Jeff Pearlman on houseofrun

"I wrote to all these schools, I really wanted to run, I wanted to run Division I and I was a 4:59 miler. That's mediocre, and Coach Fischer was really the only guy that wrote me back and said 'you come out, and if you're into doing this then we'll take you and we'll work with you.' He had nothing to gain by taking me. I was never going to be great, and he treated me like any other runner, and it's still one of the great honors and one of the proudest things in my life that I sort of hung with this Division I team for a year. And what that gave me, and what he gave me was priceless"

The UD Track and XC coverage continues to grow.  Anthony Raimondo's article has become the top story on Flotrack.org, a national website for high school, collegiate, and professional coverage of track and field and cross country.

"Title IX Abolishes Another Men's Running Program" written by Anthony Raimondo

Lexi Ambrogi's article in Sunday's News Journal

"In 2008, the university was looking to cut a lot more than just the indoor track program. But because of the petitions, letters and press circulating the issue, the university saved face by only cutting one of three programs. This year, the running community was blindsided." -Lexi Ambrogi

Athletic Director Muir's UDel Audio Interview on dropping Men's XC and Track and Field

News Journal article by Kevin Tresolini
"We were one of the highest academic sports in the whole school and had the lowest student [financial] upkeep. It just doesn't make sense." - Junior Captain Andy Weaver

Sports Illustrated Article by Jeff Pearlman

The University of Delaware dropped the Men's XC and Outdoor Track and Field program on Wednesday morning, announcing that it will downgrade the teams to the club level, and that they will no longer be a member of the NCAA.

Speaking personally as an alumni and proud member of the University of Delaware's track and field community, I am saddened and confused by this sudden and abrupt news. This not only hurts the current members of the team (whose lives have just been unjustly altered), but it is also a sad day for all of Delaware high school male athletes who no longer have the opportunity to compete for Coach Fischer and the University of Delaware. More news may be posted as it becomes available.

Tuesday Night 'Fun Run' to Honor Coach Fischer

New 'Fischer Running Club' to be created in his name

Every Tuesday at 6 P.M., a group of runners meets under the direction of Delaware Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Jim Fischer. Even after putting in a long day of coaching at the Delaware Field House, Coach Fischer gives his full attention to the Tuesday night group each week. He has been volunteering his evenings to coach local runners in the community for more than 20 years.

In light of the recent news regarding the termination of his XC and T&F programs, next Tuesday (February 1) we are holding a community FUN RUN at the UD indoor track at 6 P.M. The run will honor Coach Fischer for his many years of service to the Delaware running community.  EVERYONE is welcome, and we hope to make this a huge event. Please bring family, friends, and your running gear!!

Coach has called this the "Tuesday Night Group," but it's always been his dream to one day form a running club. Next Tuesday will be the inaugural meeting of the brand new "FISCHER RUNNING CLUB.”  Details and plans will be distributed at the event, but we plan to form a running team that will train and compete in Coach Fischer's name. All are welcome to join, but there is no pressure! Tuesday night’s run will be dedicated to Coach Fischer and the UDXC/UDTF teams. Hope to see you there!

If you have any ideas of how to make this an even more special event, please email mikeadigennaro@gmail.com
