Gibson, Hajec win titles at Kent, Delaware meet

DOWNSTATE - Charles Gibson of Dover High narrowly edged Milford's Chad Carpenter to win the individual Kent County boys' cross country championship on Tuesday.
Gibson's win sparked the Senators to their first Kent County team championship.
In the girls' meet, Caesar Rodney claimed the Kent County team title as standout Jill Hajec finished a second off her course record with a time of 19:14 to win the individual championship.
Gibson set a Milford High course record with a time of 17:00 to edge Carpenter, who finished with a time of 17:05. The two battled stride-for-stride during the entire race, but it was Gibson who had the kick left to pull out the win.
Hajec set the Milford course record two years ago in a dual meet. The Riders' Kashante Codner finished in second place, nearly a minute off the pace set by Hajec.
Cape, Jays take Sussex titles: Cape Henlopen's Matt Jackson and Seaford's Caitlin McGroety set course records in leading their squads to the boys' and girls' team titles, respectively, in the Sussex County meet at Redden State Forest in Georgetown.
Jackson won the boys' race in a time of 16:55, 14 seconds ahead of teammate Matt Riggin, who placed second. The Vikings had seven runners finish in the top 10 of the four-team meet.
McGroety's winning time of 19:33 in the girls' race put her 47 seconds of second-place finisher Rebecca Singh of Sussex Tech. The Blue Jays put four runners in the top seven of the three-school event.
