Dielmann hitting his
stride for Sallies
GREENVILLE -- There's no stopping Charlie Dielmann.
The Salesianum senior broke his right arm this past cross country season and overcame a bout with mononucleosis.
He then had only three weeks to train for the indoor state track meet and a month more for outdoor.
But last week in the Christiana Relays, he anchored the 4 x 800 team to a win. On Saturday, Dielmann did it again.
He ran the last leg in one minute, 57.7 seconds -- he ran the first quarter in 55.8 -- edging out Highland High (N.J.) for first place (8:05.88) in the Diamond State Relays at Alexis I. du Pont High and qualifying for the Penn Relays.
Dielmann got the baton one second back and took the lead in the first 10 meters. Highland's anchor regained a 5-meter lead in the first turn. Dielmann caught him, and the two stayed neck and neck until the final turn.
Going into the final straightaway, Dielmann had some extra juice and kicked to the finish, winning by 1.38 seconds.
Dielmann also ran the second leg of the 1,600 relay, helping Sallies win the second heat (fourth overall). He had to beat out the same Highland foe in that leg.
"I wasn't very confident up until winter," Dielmann said. When he won the 1,500 and 800 at indoor states, he said he felt he was finding his stride. "Winning those two were my breakouts."
In the 3,200 relay, Sallies also benefited from a two-second lead from Kevin Monahan's 1:59.9 first-leg run.
The Sals' all-sophomore distance medley relay squad also finished first.
In field events, Jim Del Grosso set a Sallies record of 6 feet, 7 inches for first place in the high jump.
Other outstanding performances from Delaware schools included Caesar Rodney's girls team taking third in both the 800 (1:48.58) and 1,600 relays (4:06.53). Ursuline took third in both the 3,200 (10:01.25) and the distance medley relay (12:55.65).
Danielle Bailey was impressive for Christiana in the girls 4x100 fifth-place finish (52.19). She came from fourth place to mow down the competition, winning the second heat.
The Delcastle boys sprint team had another good day, grabbing third in the 400 relay and fourth in the 800 relay. Michael Downs, the anchor for both relays, was impressive as he took the baton in fourth and came up only 0.04 seconds shy of first in the 400.
McKean's Mandy Stille won the high jump and was third in the long jump. William Penn's Lateefah Vaughn won the discus and placed third in the shot put.
The William Penn (Pa.) girls track team, the national indoor champs in the 800 and 1,600 relays, broke three meet relay records -- 400 (48.24), 800 (1:40.59) and 1,600 (3:52.67). It also won the 3,200 (9:36.34) by nearly 22 seconds.
