Lake Forest lauds ex-athletic director Blades

FELTON - Only one small thing marred James H. Blades' day Saturday.
First, the former Lake Forest School District athletic director was grand marshal of the high school's homecoming parade. Then, prior to the afternoon's game against Smyrna, the Spartans' stadium was dedicated in his name.
But the visitors spoiled Lake Forest's celebration 28-14.
After 33 years with Lake Forest, Mr. Blades retired from the district last year to take a similar position with St. Thomas More Academy.
But the affection for him among district residents was obvious. The streets of Felton were lined with well-wishers cheering him, the football team and the high school classes' floats. At the stadium, cheers filled the air and shouts of, "We love you, Mr. Blades" could be heard as he and his family walked onto the track for the ceremony.
"He is a great human being of character and integrity," said Dean Ivory, Lake Forest High School principal, as he announced the dedication.
"He is a good friend and administrator and a respected mentor," he added. "This is a special day."
As everyone in the stadium, including his daughter Jill Zink, son Scott Blades and granddaughter Madeleine Zink looked on, Mr. Blades and his wife, Bonnie, unveiled a brick and stone monument proclaiming the stadium as the James H. Blades Stadium.
Mr. Blades said simply, "Thank you."
